Doing something more.

I’ve been reading some books by Derek Murphy of Creativeindie.com, and a lot of what he says makes a lot more sense than the regular advice I’ve seen around the internet. One of the main takeaways I’ve gotten is to do something more for people than asking them to help you out in some way; provide value to other peoples lives. The hard part is figuring out what I can do to help people out—I don’t have much of a platform, I don’t have much spare time, and I’m certainly not a rich philanthropist—but there is something I’m passionate about, which is writing, so I decided to start a Facebook page for South Puget Sound Writers.

Although at this point anyone can join, from anywhere, it does target writers in the SPS area, from Olympia to Seattle. Hopefully the SPSW Facebook page will be a place for people in this area to connect, chat, share ideas, find people to provide feedback on their work, and simply have a friendly place to chat about what they are passionate about: the written word. If you’re looking for a Facebook page geared towards authors in our area, please feel free to check it out: South Puget Sound Writers. Even if you’re not from the area, anyone looking for the same things as we are are more than welcome!

Also, if you’re looking for writing advice that’s outside the norm (at least in so far as I’m used to reading about), you should check out Creativeindie.com with Derek Murphy. There is also Urbanepics.com, which has a ton of fiction available.
